Meta AI and Hello Robot Join Forces to Bring Artificial Intelligence to Home Robots

Martinez, CA Wednesday, June 21, 2023

Today Meta AI and Hello Robot Inc have announced a partnership to advance home robots via Artificial Intelligence (AI). Meta has released HomeRobot, an open source robotics stack for Stretch, a versatile mobile manipulator made by Hello Robot. Powered by advances in embodied AI, the HomeRobot software enables Stretch to accomplish in-home tasks when given open vocabulary commands such as ‘Move the glass from the dinner table to the counter’.

“We’re thrilled to partner with Meta to democratize robots for the home,” says Hello Robot CEO Dr. Aaron Edsinger. “We believe robots like Stretch can enhance life for everyone, including children, older adults, and people with disabilities. Meta’s HomeRobot framework and benchmark will help make this vision a reality”.

The HomeRobot framework enables researchers in AI to develop and benchmark new algorithms for in-home Open Vocabulary Mobile Manipulation (OVMM)). Open-vocabulary mobile manipulation is the problem of picking up 𝑨𝑵𝒀 object, and placing it in 𝑨𝑵𝒀 location, in 𝑨𝑵𝒀 home, given just names. HomeRobot includes a combination of large, multi-room, human-authored environments, a large diversity of objects and spaces, and both real-world and simulation support.

By releasing the HomeRobot framework to the research community, Meta hopes to accelerate progress in AI powered home robots. To this end, Meta, along with Hello Robot, Georgia Tech, and Carnegie Mellon University, is organizing the NeurIPS 2023 HomeRobot: Open Vocabulary Mobile Manipulation (OVMM) Challenge  This competition will be the first large-scale sim-to-real mobile manipulation challenge. A Stretch mobile manipulator goes to the competition winner.
